IUFRO The International Union of Forestry Research
Organisations
http://iufro.boku.ac.at/iufro/
IUFRO is a non-profit, non- governmental, voluntary, international scientific union open to all organisations
and individuals
involved in forestry research. IUFRO’s activities are organized primarily through its 277 specialized
Units in 8 technical Divisions.
IUFRO was officially founded in 1892 at Eberswalde, Germany. Initially called International Union of
Forest Experiment
Stations, IUFRO has grown to more than 700 member-institutions at present, 115 countries are represented,
with about 15,000
participating scientists. Its original purposes—information sharing, cooperation, and coordination,
in the broadest sense—remain
similar. But the breadth and depth of its interests have expanded to embrace virtually all the scientific
aspects of forestry and
forest products including such facilitating disciplines as management and information science and history,
as well as extended
cooperation with other scientific and professional organizations.
CIFOR Centre for International Forest Research
CIFOR was established under the CGIAR system in response to global concerns about the social, environmental
and economic
consequences of loss and degradation of forests. It operates through a series of highly decentralised
partnerships with key
institutions and/or individuals throughout the developing and industrialised worlds. The nature and
duration of these partnerships
is determined by the specific research problems being addressed.
Web pages provide summaries of current research activities including the criteria and indicators
study as part of the concerns
over SFM and the development of the new TROPIS data base - Tree Growth and Permanent Plot Information
System, which
seeks to help forest scientists make better use of existing tree growth information.
ETFRN European Tropical Forest Research Network

Very good weblinks provided to a wide range of institutes -both within Europe and those of global concern
and provides direct
access to those pages covering global forestry/environmental initiatives

EFI European Forestry Institute
http://www.efi.fi
EFI’s mission is to: promote, conduct and co-operate in research of forests, forestry and forest products
at the pan-European
level and to make the results of the research known to all interested parties, notably in the areas
of policy formulation and
implementation, in order to promote the conservation and sustainable management of forests in Europe.
Some useful links to European Institutes and news and documents available on the web. Databases available
to member
organisations only and restricted to European matters. However some issues do cover the
global concerns e.g. recent
proceedings on National Forestry Programmes. The Certification Information Service can be accessed
through the EFI home
page.
