FORESTERS' TIPS, TECHNIQUES, AND TRICKS OF THE TRADE

bullet1 TECHNICAL

bullet2 RANDOM OR SYSTEMATIC?

In forest inventory, an element of random sampling allows you to calculate sampling error, but a systematic design might be more appropriate if you know little about the structure of a natural forest and have no reliable maps. Where previous knowledge (imagery/photos etc.) enables some degree of stratification, then randomised sampling within the strata is likely to be more productive. There are formulae that one can use (see the FAO Handbook on Forest Inventory) for post stratification i.e. assigning a plot to a particular strata after it has been assessed. This works well with strip plots broken down into recording units.
