Plantations: Potential and Limitations
Hardcastle P., November 1999.
Available from the WB Forestry Policy web site.
Provides a clear overview of the current situation with respect to plantations and their role in the
future. In recent years the role of
plantations has been questioned and it is no longer a subsector funded by the donors. However
with the rise in interest in
sequestration and a realisation that natural forest will be unable to provide industrial requirements,
further attention needs to be
given to this type of investment. Current area of planting is believed to be around 110-140 million
ha, figures are not precise.
The paper suggests that an additional 80 million ha will be needed by 2050.
