bullet1 FOREST MANAGEMENT

bullet2 Sustainable Forest Management - Issues Paper.

Written by FAO for the WB Policy Review. August 1999.
Can be downloaded from the World bank web page covering  the Forest Policy Review:
  http://wbln0018.worldbank.org/essd/forestpol-e.nsf/MainView .

This paper provides a good overview of examples of good forest management and highlights the limited number of such cases. Good background for the issues.

bullet2 Sustainable Forest Management

A Review of Current Conventional Wisdom.

This paper is written by Conservation International under commission from the WB Development Research Group.

Provides another, very different viewpoint to that of the traditional forester.  It takes the stance that  SFM  will always have minimal economic viability  due to a combination of slow growth and minimal real price increases on one hand and the competing  high interest rates that seem to dominate the market sector in LDCs.

bullet2 A Sustainable Forest Future

D. Pearce, F. Putz and J. Vanclay
CSERGE, September 1999

This paper was commissioned by DFID to provide a competing view to that provided by the Conservation International stance above. Provides an answer to some of the economic limitations of SFM - highlights the importance of carbon sequestration in the equation. Again available from the WB Forest Policy Implementation Review web site.
