You might need to be creative in putting over a message to someone who doesn't speak your language or
cannot read it.
One technical officer (male) had a cook who could not read English, so written messages were no good.
So, when the
officer wanted to inform the cook he would not be in for meals, he left a crossed knife and fork on
the table. If he was
going to be in, they were laid parallel. If a friend was coming, two sets were left out. If it was a
lady friend, two sets and a
flower were displayed.
