FORESTERS' TIPS, TECHNIQUES, AND TRICKS OF THE TRADE

bullet2 TROUBLESOME SEEDS

If you have recalcitrant seeds that will not keep their viability long enough for planting, try the following. Mix them with damp sand, wrap them in fine wire mesh, place the package in a 2 foot deep pit, and cover with soil. When you are ready to use them, dig them out. The method seems to work by reducing the fluctuations in temperature, humidity, light and atmosphere, so the seed is tricked into keeping dormant. In the same vein, remember that a cooled seed store that keeps going wrong and warming up is worse than no cool store at all. Even dried orthodox seed  kept in sealed containers may lose viability more quickly due to the fluctuations.
