FORESTERS'
TIPS, TECHNIQUES,
AND
TRICKS OF THE TRADE | | |
FOUR BY FOUR BY FAR?
Most of the time, rough roads do not need a four-wheel drive vehicle. The most important characteristics
are good cross-country tyres, high ground clearance, and tough springs. Double-cabin pickups of the
Japanese variety often have these
characteristics, and are much more versatile and cheaper than most of the unnecessarily luxuriant “off-roaders”.
To improve
grip and ride if unloaded, add a couple of sandbags in the back. This sort of transport has been successfully
used on many
seed collection projects. The addition of an electric winch and spade should get you out if you are
so foolish as to get really
stuck.
