FORESTERS' TIPS, TECHNIQUES, AND TRICKS OF THE TRADE

bullet2 PERFECT GERMINATION

Seed germination tests must be kept moist – not too wet, not too dry. A simple way of ensuring this is to sow each replicate of the sample on sand in a dish, adding the right amount of water. Put the dish into a polythene bag and seal tightly with a twist of wire, trapping sufficient air to keep the bag ballooned above the dish,. Remove from the bag only to count and remove the seedlings. You should not need to add any further water, as it will be re-circulated as the seeds germinate and seedlings grow. Keep the bags away from direct sunlight. This method can give more reliable results than an incubator that is not properly managed.
