PLANTATION SAMPLE PLOTS
When making an inventory of plantations, strip plots and cluster plots may be used. But if you
have distinct compartments
then it is probably more productive to set out a series of circular plots on a fixed bearing. The
bearing being decided in the
office in order to lead the survey team through the main width of the compartment. For compartments
of less than around
50 ha around 8 plots is probably sufficient. These can be supported by additional basal areas
sweeps if the plot variation is
extreme. For all inventory the required size of the sample can be calculated using standard formulae
after an initial pilot
sample had been done and the crop variation determined.
