Even if you do not need to use the local language, it is still worth learning. It shows your interest in the country and its culture. Don’t be embarrassed if you are not good - most people, especially your colleagues, will appreciate your effort. A sense of humour and the ability to laugh at oneself should be cultivated. You may make some mistakes, but your colleagues will laugh with you, not at you.  The wife of one TCO remembers when she tried to say, in Nepali, that she felt happy (khusi). The word she actually used was khasi. So she happily stated  “I feel like a male castrated goat.
